The family is home, the turkey is done, and someone at the table asks the question: so, what should we do now?
This year, the answer is close by. Here is a long weekend in Wells County that works for grandparents and grandkids alike, with nothing more than a short drive between stops. Pick one day or take the whole thing.
Thursday, Nov. 26: Work Up the Appetite
Before the big meal, start the morning at the free Wobble Before You Gobble 5K Run/Walk. Run it, walk it, or push a stroller. Nobody is keeping score, and everyone is welcome. Bring the cousins, bring the dog if the rules allow, and bundle up. Make it the tradition everyone brings up again over pie.
The start time and location will be posted at visitwellscounty.com.
Friday, Nov. 27: The Night Downtown Lights Up
Once the leftovers have had their moment, get everyone out the door and over to Ouabache State Park. The bison graze along the prairie, and the trails are easy enough for every age, from the little ones in their winter boots to grandpa with his walking stick. It’s a gentle way to stretch your legs and a good excuse for some fresh air and a few photos.
When evening comes, head to downtown Bluffton. The parade line up begins at City Hall at 5 p.m., and the Christmas Lighting Celebration fills Parlor City Plaza from 6 to 8 p.m. This is the moment the whole town gathers, the lights come on, and the holiday season officially begins.
Tip: Grab an early dinner at a downtown restaurant and you’ll already be in place when the lights come on. No hunting for a spot, no rushing, just a warm table and a front row seat to the evening.
Saturday, Nov. 28: Shop Small, Downtown
Small Business Saturday belongs downtown. Start the morning with coffee at Hugh’s, then wander through the boutiques, antique shops, and local makers. This is where you’ll find gifts you won’t find anywhere else, and every purchase stays right here in the community.
When your bags are full and your feet need a rest, close out the afternoon at Parlor City Brewing or with a scoop at Toppings Ice Cream. Yes, even in November. Especially in November.
Sunday, Nov. 29: A Slow Morning
No alarms today. Linger over brunch, take one last stroll through downtown, and let the weekend wind down at its own pace. Then point the car toward home with a trunk full of treasures and a few new traditions in the making.
Stay the Weekend
Friday’s celebration runs until after dark, and Saturday’s shopping is easier when you don’t have to drive back the night before. Book a room or a campsite and let the weekend set its own pace. Check out our Places to Stay and Camping pages for options around the county.
Know Before You Go
County offices are closed Nov. 26 and 27.
The Historical Museum is closed until Dec. 5, when Christmas in the Mansion begins.
Schedules are subject to change. Check visitwellscounty.com for the latest updates.
However you spend the weekend, we hope it’s full of good food, good company, and a little bit of wandering. Happy Thanksgiving from Wells County.
